***Currently serving individuals in California and Oregon*** Hello! My name is Carlota, and I am a social justice advocate; a believer in science; a fierce and overly-obsessed dog mom to two wacky pups; an immigrant; and steadfast in my conviction that we have a fundamental obligation to help one another if we have the means and capacity to do so. I am a licensed clinical social worker, and have been in practice since 2013. I completed my undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley in 2008, and received my Master of Social Work (MSW) in 2013 from the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. I embrace evidence-based and research-supported therapies, while also honoring the power of the therapeutic relationship and process. I specialize in trauma and PTSD, depression, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and panic, grief and loss, interpersonal difficulties, and life transitions. I am a trained teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and am certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD and Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depression (IPT-D). I also have extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) for Bipolar Disorder, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for the treatment of PTSD in children and teens. Why might I be a good fit for you? Because I get it, and I am whole-heartedly with you on this journey. I know that coming to therapy is a profound undertaking, and that what I will ask of you in this process is not easy. Introspection, change, and confronting avoidance are hard, and so I strive to provide a safe, authentic, and collaborative environment that honors your story, experience, and identity with compassion and without judgment; I strive to be worthy of bearing witness to your story.
Have you ever felt like you're either "too much" or "not enough"? This could be a general struggle, or it could be related to a specific trait (i.e. too Asian/not Asian enough or too Queer/not Queer enough). Perhaps you struggle to belong and don't feel like you quite fit anywhere. Or maybe factors such as perfectionism, self-doubt, overthinking, or comparison to others are creating problems. All of these issues are quite common, but can also be extremely nuanced. I understand and I can help. Let's explore your unique identity, coming to a better understanding of who you are. I'd like to help you unconditionally embrace and accept yourself. We can build a therapeutic relationship that supports you in meeting your goals. I hope to accompany you in your growth and healing as you laugh, cry, learn, explore, set goals, and gain skills along the way. Finding a new therapist can be an overwhelming process. I'd really like to support you in finding the right fit, so I offer a free initial phone consultation. I am open to working with all adults, but particularly enjoy helping those in the Asian and LGBTQ+ communities. Reach out to set up a time to chat; I'm here to help.
Hi! I'm Hazel. As a queer, trans, and Latinx person, I've experienced my own challenges with finding a therapist who truly listened and understood me. This propelled me to start my journey to becoming a therapist over 10 years ago. Many of my clients are LGBTQIA+, Latinx/e/a/o, BIPOC, college students, academics, artists, and/or activists. They're trying to manage life transitions, identity exploration, family relationships, anxiety, depression, trauma, marginalization, stress, relationship issues, land so much more. It’s my hope that through our work, you will find new pathways of resilience, freedom, growth, pleasure, and balance.
I help people access greater psychological and emotional wellness by working through trauma, unhealthy relational patterns, and old beliefs. If you find that family or romantic relationships are difficult, you are socially isolated, your career or school performance is suffering, or you struggle with anxiety, depression or loss, therapy can help. Our work together can allow you to cultivate deeper self-understanding and acceptance, which are the stepping-stones to a more vital, engaged, and fulfilling life. I am experienced working with depression, anxiety, and other mental health diagnoses, but I never see my clients as simply a diagnosis. I see race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, and age as relevant to your experience and to therapy.

I work with people who feel like they don’t belong. Together, we’ll find ways to reconnect you to your inner strengths and capacities, to community and nourishing relationships, and to the world at large. There’s many reasons people might feel like misfits, weirdos, or exiles. Many of us can’t or won’t fit into our socially proscribed boxes. I have particular experience working with queer and non-binary folks, with people on the autism spectrum, with multiracial and/or bicultural folks, with creatives, innovators, and activists working on the edge of social change, and with survivors of trauma. And I’m open to working with anyone who feels drawn to my approach, so feel free to reach out!
It is my belief that deeply understanding yourself and being deeply understood go hand-in-hand with healing. In our work together, I will support you in exploring your inner world, your relationships, and your history. I am guided by psychodynamic theory, while also being relational in my approach. This means that I aim to be spacious enough for you to vulnerably and bravely explore, and relational enough for you to feel safe to do-so. The people I work with often struggle with self-esteem, relationships, identity, communication, depression, and anxiety. No matter the concern you bring, we will work together to make sense of what is going on for you, and move you toward feeling better. I am able to work with you via Telehealth in Oregon and Washington, and in-person at my office on NE Alberta in Portland.

Are you struggling to find your way while dealing with family expectations? Is it hard to feel like what you’re doing is “enough”? Maybe you’re struggling with anxious thoughts or conflict with important people in your life. That is understandable. The experience of being first-gen has its own unique challenges. Sometimes family doesn’t understand what you're experiencing and that can feel isolating. As a bilingual/bicultural therapist, I have firsthand experience with the challenges of trying to succeed in college while also being the first in the family to step into these spaces. I'm here to support you through these challenging times and together we can find solutions and healthy ways of managing life. Finding the right therapist is so important; feel free to reach out to me to see if I may be the right for you.
For many of us, the hardest challenge to overcome is to ask for help. If you're reading this, you've already found the courage to start becoming the best version of yourself. While as an individual you are unique, none of us are perfect and we all experience conflict, hardships, and a variety of emotions. I believe our life experiences as well as cultural background influence the way in which we interact with the world. I am a strong proponent of collaboration and I view the therapeutic relationship as a team. I have daytime availability Monday through Thursday. If you feel overwhelmed with all of the changes in your life and in the world around you, or conversely feel numb and detached, let's talk. I practice with a variety of clients, however I specialize in teens and adults experiencing the effects of life changes and transitions, codependency, relationship issues, and managing work/life balance. I have a gentle approach to building relationships combined with down to earth 'real talk' about what can help you feel better. I often incorporate mindfulness techniques into our work together, and am someone who's open to feedback and learning about your unique perspective on the world.

Modern Outlook LLC owned by Demetrio Sanchez, LCSW, founded in 2017, has teamed up with Restore Therapy LLC to provide in-person and virtual mental health and performance coaching to local athletes in the Pacific Northwest and nationally. Driven out of their own experiences of being collegiate athletes and then later acquiring training as mental health professionals, it became obvious that there was a need for mental health support specific to athletes. The partnership aims to meet that need. Modern Outlook has developed the niche of performance-focused mental health services over the course of serving a range of competitive athletes in every sport.

I specialize in working with college students, graduate students and early career professionals who struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, trauma, depression, burn out and more. If you're asking yourself "how am I supposed to balance school/work, having a social life, eating healthy, exercising, having hobbies and taking care of my mental health?!" you are not alone. Adulting is hard, especially when you still feel like you're new to it. You might feel like your thoughts are always negative or spiraling out of control or you're always tense or can't seem to stay in the moment for things that are "supposed" to be fun. My approach to therapy focuses on helping you learn to relax, reduce the impact of negative thoughts, savor the joyful things in life, and live in alignment with your values. In therapy with me you will learn concrete strategies to improve your life while also having time to just "talk it out" in a warm and supportive environment. I offer a free, 15-minute phone consultation prior to scheduling our first session to determine if I am the best fit for your care. Please call, text or email now to schedule a consultation. Looking forward to speaking with you!
